Loyalty and Betrayal: The Story of the American Mob (trailer & info)

Gary directed, edited and wrote this Emmy award winning documentary, episode #1 of a 4 hour mini-series on organized crime for Fox Television.  Fox had hired 7 people to accomplish the same set of film making roles for episode #2.   By the time the Emmy was awarded, no one at Fox cared anymore.  All the execs who had greenlighted the program were gone.   As Orson Welles once said, “Well, that’s Hollywood.”

New York Times review

… the snappiest of the genre … the gamey history is punchily put together…”

“Unlike Hollywood which has added a patina of glamour to the Mob of decades ago — Loyalty and Betrayal: The Story of the American Mob, does nothing to mask the murderers and their grisly violence. There are blood and guts, photos of the players, and elegant accompanying essays by New York Daily News columnist Sidney Zion. Mob won’t necessarily lead you to a better understanding of the workings of the underworld, but it drives home its horror. A+”
